Yugoslav authorities have halted broadcasts of a local private radio station for allegedly breaching national security regulations, the European Journalism Centre (EJC) reported.

Radio Jasenica in the town of Smederevska Palanka, 40 kilometers southwest of Belgrade, had stopped broadcasting after the Telecommunications Ministry confiscated part of its transmitter on April 1. "The explanation given by the ministry was that its (Radio Jasenica's) broadcasts were running counter to the interests of the country's security," EJC said quoting the Serbian independent Radio B92.

Radio Jasenica is a member of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), an association of 21 radio and 17 television stations across the country.

In March, Yugoslav authorities also shut down the popular Radio B92, and in April, a new government-installed management began broadcasting again, using the seized B92 transmitter, frequency and call signal. The 45 full-time and 30 part-time employees of the Belgrade-based independent station announced their resignations. An official statement released by ANEM, the independent broadcasters' network, said that the original staff dissociated itself from the "usurping management."

The ban on these independent radio stations is one of the most significant developments in a series of crackdowns on free media since NATO airstrikes against Yugoslav military targets began on March 24.

The wave of media repression has resulted in the closure of a large number of the members of ANEM, which was led by B92, as well as the closure of all independent press organizations. The prominent independent Albanian-language newspaper and radio station Koha Ditore also was closed at the end of March as were all other independent media in Kosovo, including Radio 21
